Noggins are the horizontal members between studwork. They have several functions such as those below but generally do not serve structural purposes as sheathing material can act in a load-bearing capacity. Noggins must have a precise fit between studs; they can either be measured and cut on site or can be installed in wall panels at factory level.
The functions of noggins are:
Preventing studs from buckling when vertical loads are applied.
Providing a support for partitions, plasterboard and internal fixings and fixtures (e.g. sanitary ware)
Stiffen prefabricated panels for handling purposes.
And, where necessary, noggins can assist in achieving specified fire resistance.
